St Pauls Infant and Junior School

I remember being in tears when I was left in the school playground. My sister, Patricia, (Trish) would have been around somewhere but I really don’t recall her at this school, despite her being a year above me.  The old school house was a beautiful Grade II listed red brick and flint building. See attached photo and quite small. It was sited between the A41 and the Grand Union Canal (where my sisters and I spent most of our youth opening locks for the barges and charging sixpence – young entrepreneurs that we were!)

The school caretaker was a lady – unusual in those days. She was also the “lollypop lady” who shepherded us across the road by the bridge over the canal and further down Hunton Bridge to the Womens Institute where we had our school meals.

My close friends were Joan Boyd who lived nearby, Helen Campbell, Linda Jones and Jennifer Tooman
